We’re pleased to announce that due to their popularity in past years, Rita Allison has agreed to offer the Ukrainian Egg Decoration workshops again in March 2026. By way of introduction, here is the story Rita told that originally piqued our interest.
Years ago, a young woman came into my gift shop to ask if I would be interested in holding Ukrainian Egg decorating workshops in the store. Her Ukrainian grandmother had taught her and she wanted to pass along her expertise. That was 40 years ago and I was enamored of the whole process as well as the finished products. I have been making them ever since those workshops. I try as much as possible to gather with friends to do them because that is a really big part of the tradition in Ukraine. The workshops I have led have included pre-teens as well as seniors, in schools and senior centers. At first many people say “ Oh, I could never do that!” and it gives me pleasure to help them along on their artistic journey. That is the basic goal of these workshops—to bring out the artistic ability of each participant—and, hopefully, to produce some beautiful eggs!
This QR code takes you to a 20-minute video of an egg being decorated in the Ukrainian manner. After watching, you may want to consider attending the workshops. Also, please read the attached flyer for a super-short review of the egg decorating process. And yes, both sessions required to complete your own egg!
There is a deadline date of March 1 at Noon to sign yourself up for this event. We’ll need your name, email address, unit number, phone number, and assurance that you have, indeed, watched the Pysanky video. You may send this information to ptsocial@rcn.com, or text/call it to 773-343-1022.
Because the Party Room Kitchen is small and the work intricate, attendance will be limited to 6 persons in each set of workshops, each with a minimum of 3 persons signed up. Children age 10 to 12 may participate in the workshops accompanied by an adult. Necessary supplies will be provided, as will contact info for those who might wish to continue Pysanky on their own.
