She covered many topics of interest and discussed priorities the 48th Ward Office is focused on. Her Chief of Staff Nicole Granacki discussed services available through their office on Bryn Mawr and 311, and efforts to streamline response to inquiries and requests despite budget cuts. Some of the topics covered includ highlights and concerns about the City budget, Broadway development, housing affordability, tent encampments in the park, the coming water main project along Sheridan Road and potholes.
There was a visual presentation accompanying the discussion, outlining most of the topics they spoke about. To view this, Click Here. Just click “Slide Show” and you can scroll through the slides that were narrated by Leni and Nicole.
This was followed by a Question & Answer session. There was one question raised that I’ve received questions about in the office – a very visible increased police presence along the Edgewater lakefront and Foster Beach. I actually received a statement from the 48th Ward Office:
We have asked the Police to pay special attention at our lakefront parks for a multitude of safety concerns voiced by constituents. Our office has coordinated with DSS, DFSS, and Parks to conduct encampment litter and debris abatement operations at various encampment locations along our lakefront in which DFSS, DSS, or CpK request CPD presence to preserve public safety….As the weather warms, CPD districts in our Ward will patrol regularly to check park attendance and monitor the lakefront.
[Also] there was credible intelligence from CPDs CPIC that a large gathering was planned last night at Foster Ave beach….Our understanding is that the 20th Police District planned in advance for a possible large, unsanctioned gathering after concerns were raised about potential public safety risks. In response, CPD made an operational decision to deploy officers in anticipation of crowd management and related safety needs….[We] cannot say that this level of police presence will be the norm throughout the summer, as our understanding is that this response was tied to a specific anticipated event rather than a standing approach for the lakefront.
Our office remains committed to ensuring that public safety responses are proportionate, effective, and respectful of residents’ ability to enjoy our shared public spaces.
