The initial excavation revealed extensive utility conflicts that will require a minor change in plans. DWM is currently working with the design team to formalize a change in the new water main’s location along Bryn Mawr and anticipates resuming work as soon as the design change is complete. After all buildings are connected to the new water main, final connections will be made to fully remove the old water main from service. Restoration will follow shortly after.
Parking & Traffic Impacts
“No Parking” signs will be posted on both sides of the street during construction hours (7am-4pm). Parking will be allowed outside of work hours and on weekends. Though local traffic may be limited during work hours due to staging and machinery movement, no permanent lane closures are anticipated.
The Department of Water Management (DWM) is ahead of schedule and has done some initial exploratory digging today in anticipation of the Bryn Mawr / Sheridan Water Main Replacement project set to begin soon. Workers will officially start water main replacement tomorrow, beginning on Bryn Mawr at Kenmore and heading east to Sheridan.
Please see the following notice:
Sheridan & Bryn Mawr Water Main Replacement
This summer, the Department of Water Management (DWM) is replacing the water main along the north side of Bryn Mawr from Kenmore to Sheridan and along the west side of Sheridan from Bryn Mawr to Foster. This project is a $2.8 million investment to replace water main pipes that are over 120 years old.
The project started today and will be completed in two phases:
Phase 1: Replacement of the water main on the north side of Bryn Mawr from Kenmore to Sheridan started today and is estimated to be done by mid-June (weather permitting). Bryn Mawr from Kenmore to Sheridan has been reduced to one lane in each direction. Daytime parking restrictions are in place. Look for “No Parking” signs.
Phase 2: Replacement of the water main on the west side of Sheridan from Bryn Mawr to Foster is estimated to begin in June and estimated to be complete by September / October (weather permitting). During this phase, we anticipate lane shifts as workers dig, replace pipe, and backfill with concrete.
Please expect some traffic congestion. No full street closures are anticipated for this project.
After the water main work is complete, restoration will occur, including any curb that may have been impacted by the project. Following restoration, we anticipate full street resurfacing on Bryn Mawr from Kenmore to Sheridan and on Sheridan from Bryn Mawr to Foster.

The project is expected to begin on Bryn Mawr between Kenmore and Sheridan. The water main favors the North curbside lane of traffic (traveling West) which is expected to be shutdown between June 1st and 15th. The new water main will be installed, tested and tied in to the necessary buildings. Only west bound traffic will be impacted. When the install is finished they will backfill the street with concrete, and return the lane to regular traffic.
Then they expect to begin on Sheridan Road, around June 15th, where the water main favors the West curbside lane of traffic (travelling south). They expect to only shutdown 100 to 200 feet of that lane at a time. The new water main will be installed, pressure tested and then tied in to buildings along the west side of Sheridan. It will be put into service, the lane will be back filled with concrete and released to traffic. Then they will move on to the next 100 to 200 feet stretch, working their way down to Foster Avenue between June and sometime in September (weather permitting).
Water shut offs will not impact Park Tower or any other buildings on the East side of Sheridan. And, unless they find any surprises such as unexpected buried utility lines or problems with sewer lines or basins, the expectation is they will only shutdown the curbside southbound lane of traffic. The middle south bound lane and both north bound lanes of traffic will remain open.
Of course, that will create inconveniences from time to time, particularly during high traffic periods of day. They committed to flaggers and ample signage to be present to help keep drivers routed and aware. Work is expected Mondays through Fridays between 7am to 3:30pm, weather permitting. So those early morning hours could see some entanglements, particularly for southbound traffic. There are days work may go beyond 3:30pm, if surprises are found. Since water will be off to impacted buildings, they expressed a commitment to keep working until water is turned back on each working day.
But again…water shut offs will only impact communities on the west side of Sheridan.
Barring challenging surprises or significant weather delays, the new water main between Bryn Mawr and Foster should be installed and operational by early to mid September. THE GOOD NEWS – once this is done, they intend to repave all lanes of traffic with new asphalt, both northbound and southbound. Of course, traffic will be routed in real time around workers and obstacles with signage and flaggers. If all goes well, paving should be done by sometime around October.
A few miscellaneous points. Buses will continue running. The City’s 311 can be contacted to address any problems in real time, as well as the 48th Ward Office. DWM & CDOT expect to provide weekly updates on progress and any issues that arise. We will post those updates when we receive them. These will include contact information where residents can reach out with any questions and concerns.
As planned, water shutoffs would only be necessary along the West side of Sheridan road. They plan to give ample notice and expect that any water shut offs would not last for more than 2 to 3 hours at a time. Fortunately though, it appears this will not impact Park Tower or other communities and businesses along the lake side of Sheridan Road.
That being said, they advised that we should pay attention for notices from CDOT, and in particular for the public meeting when that is scheduled and announced.
We are presently awaiting additional information on how exactly this will impact Park Tower’s water service and access to Sheridan Road.
This Department of Water Management (DWM) Water Main project planned along on Sheridan Road (Bryn Mawr to Foster) is currently with IDOT for permit review. The project is tentatively scheduled for a June start-date. It is our present understanding there will be at least one community meeting regarding this project before it begins, however no date has been proposed.
It is expected that once DWM is finished, this part of Sheridan Road will be resurfaced.
