While Working On Elevator #4, Our OTIS Service Tech Came Across Conditions Forcing The Car Out Of Service

(Car 4 serves the Lobby and 2nd Floor, and Floors 23 to 55.)

In the process of inspecting the elevator shaft and components to troubleshoot a computer related issue with the elevator, the technician found the ‘traveler’ cable was damaged. Often described as the ‘brainstem’ or ‘umbilical cord’ of an elevator, this is a flexible, heavy-duty bundle of wires and hoses that hangs beneath an elevator car. It links the moving car to the fixed building control system, sending power, lighting, signals, and emergency communications safely up and down the elevator shaft as the cab moves.

Its key functions include providing electricity to light the cab, run ventilation fans, and power the door operators. It also contains the communication lines which send floor requests information to the main controls. Perhaps most urgently, it powers the emergency alarm, phone lines, and safety door-edge sensors and contains internal steel ropes or strength members so the cable supports its own heavy weight safely over long the drops.

Although the car was functioning at the time, due to the importance and sensitivity of this cable, for passenger safety and out of an abundance of caution, it was taken out of service.

We are told at first glance, the damage appears minor and they will be attempting to repair it. If it is determined to be beyond repair, a new one will have to be ordered.
