A complete new set of bearings was ordered and are scheduled for delivery on Monday April 13th. They found a couple other ancillary repairs are needed beyond that, with parts expected by Tuesday April 14th.
The ‘bearing cap’ was also found in poor shape and is not available from any vendor – unfortunately as we learned with the Elevator #4 repair effort, Westinghouse (the original manufacturer of our elevators) has not made elevators or their parts since 1989. However, OTIS is able to fabricate this part at their machine shop. They anticipate the bearing, shaft, and cap work to be complete by Thursday April 16th. They have authorized the shop to work overtime to expedite the process, but this is dependent on the materials arriving on time.
If all goes as planned the apparatus will be delivered to Park Tower on Friday April 17th, in the morning and they will begin the installation process. The installation will take 2 to 3 days depending on adjustments.
In the interim, their team is onsite doing other ancillary repairs and maintenance to make sure everything goes smooth after the installation.
Once OTIS determines the problem definitively, they should be able to provide a prognosis and hopefully an estimated timeline.
We will update this post as we learn more.
Very unfortunately however, right on the heels of elevator #4 being returned to service, a condition was observed with elevator #3, requiring it be taken out of service.
This too impacting the lobby, 2nd floor and floors 23 to 55.
Specifically, the sheave supporting the elevators counterweight was found to have a bad bearing. The sheave is being removed and taken to their repair shop for the needed work.
Until it is in the shops hand, we won’t know the outlook entirely. Normally, if it is just the bearing it could take only a couple days and they could have it in place as soon as end of day on Friday. However, the Passover and Easter holidays may complicate that timing.
If they find that there is damage it could be about 2 1/2 weeks for a repair to be in place.
Once we know more, we will post updates.
We know the outage of elevator #4 was challenging enough, but when this type of equipment presents a problem, the need repair has to be done. We appreciate everyone’s renewed patience.
