“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” — Martin Luther King, Jr.
These powerful words spoken by Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1957 are as relevant today as they were when he spoke them. As we reflect this Monday on the life and work of Reverend King, it is critical for all of us to continue to strive for justice, equality, peace, and tolerance for our neighbors and fellow Americans. Each day, we must look for ways to support these values through our actions.
Our community today is home to many neighbors who are immigrants or refugees from countries in Africa. I have seen firsthand the many positive contributions made by these residents to our community and city. I am, like many Americans, truly disgusted by President Trump’s racist remarks about African countries, Haiti, and El Salvador and those who strive for a better life in America.
On Monday my office, in partnership with Chicago Park District, NY Trapeze School Chicago, and Peterson Garden Project, is hosting a Teen Takeover at the Broadway Armory from 1-4pm. This free event will give youth in our community a positive way to spend a day off of school, including: basketball, volleyball, rollerskating, gymnastics, trapeze, cooking class, snacks, and more. If you would like to volunteer at this event to ensure a safe and fun afternoon for local youth, please email email@example.com….”
